Create a
Lucious Natural Lipstick or Lip Treatment
Did you know
natural lipsticks were some of the first cosmetic products
used. Lip paints made by the Mesopotamians date back to 3500 B.C,
Puritan women frowned on the use of cosmetics in general.
However, they made lip balm recipes out of crushed rose petals to
soothe and color their lips.
In Paris in 1910 natural lipstick as
we know it today was first introduced. It is now the most commonly used
and purchased cosmetic product in the world.
lip treatments such as lip gloss and lip balms are a vital part of your
beauty collection. They are also a cinch to create. The majority
are made by simply melting together 2 or 3 ingredients.
If
you spend a lot of time outdoors or in the sun, you should always put
sun protection on your lips. Some people are known to brush there lips
with a soft toothbrush to remove dead skin and keep them soft and
smooth. I have found that a coating of natural oil such as coconut or
almond and rubbing your lips gently with a warm wash cloth also works
well and is easier on the lips.
Follow up with a fresh coat of
lip gloss and your lips should glow with natural color! Lip glosses and
balms have a long shelf life and will last for at least a year. The natural lipstick and lip
treatments contained in the section require storage

Aloe
Vera Lip Gloss
Aloe
Vera makes a soothing lip gloss with a very high moisture content. This
gloss is good to use in the summer after your lips have been exposed to
the sun for sometime.
What you need:
- 1 teaspoon aloe Vera gel
- ½ teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon petroleum jelly (optional)
How to make:
Mix together all three ingredients in a shallow dish or cup using the
back of a teaspoon. Gently heat the mixture until the coconut oil has
melted. (I do this in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute.) Pour
the melted mixture into a lip gloss container or clean pill box (both
available at drugstores).
Cool the lip treatment completely,
until the mixture is cool to the touch and solid.
This
takes about 10 to 20 minutes. You can speed up the cooling
time
by using the refrigerator. Rub into your lips and enjoy. Makes ½ an
ounce
Castor
Oil Lip Balm
Castor
oil mixed with lanolin is soothing to dry, cracked lips and gives your
lips a natural shine. You can also use this recipe on your eyebrows to
condition them and keep them in place.
What you need:
- 1 teaspoon castor oil
- 1 teaspoon lanolin or coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon grated beeswax
How to make:
melt the castor oil, lanolin, and beeswax together over medium heat in
a glass measuring cup in a pan of boiling water (water-bath technique).
Pour the melted mixture into a lip gloss container or clean pillbox
(both available at drugstores). Cool completely, until cool to the
touch, approximately 20 minutes. Rub into your lips and enjoy. Makes ½
an ounce
Beeswax
Lipsticks
These
are super little natural lipsticks to keep with you and use throughout the day,
either alone or under your favorite lipstick. You can also rub a bit on
your heels at night to keep them soft (of course, not the same
stick used on your lips). Use them anywhere you can use a
little
extra conditioning.
What you need:
- ¼ cup grated beeswax
- 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening
- 2 tablespoons cocoa butter
- 1 tablespoon light oil (I use almond oil)
How to make:
Mix together all the ingredients in an ovenproof container. Heat the
mixture gently in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes on high or in a
double boiler or water bath on the stove top, until everything is
melted and you have a pale golden liquid. Pour the melted mixture into
a shallow greased pan or cardboard box lined with foil. (I use empty
tea boxes.)
Allow the mixture to cool, then cut into lipsticks.
Store in a closed container or wrap each stick individually. These make
nice gifts, especially in the winter months when your friends’ lips may
need some T.L.C. (tender loving care). Rub the sticks over your lips.
Makes 4 ounces, 10 to 12 sticks
